Consultancy

Retirees who want to continue to use their general or specialist expertise can become consultants in that area. For tax purposes, setting up as a self –employed consultant (either as a sole trader or with a partner) is a convenient way of dealing with the income and expenses which relate to this. But the Inland Revenue may expect you to have more than a single client if you wish to claim ‘schedule D’ status which may allow you to offset expenses against income.
‘Interim management’ is a growing form of consultancy - where a specialist is hired to handle a specific job, often with a small company where there is not the scope for a full time appointment or with a larger company which out-sources specialist skills. Technically, it differs from consultancy in that an interim manager becomes part of the senior management team or board for the period of the job. Most of the executive search firms have interim management departments who may be interested in your specialist skills for this purpose. Many are members of the Interim Managers Association www.interimmanagement.uk.com.
